North Fork of Long Island
Just over 100 miles from Powerflow Bloomfield sits the world class wine region of Long Island’s North Fork. Previously known for potato farms and other produce, over the past 40 years it has become a destination for entrepreneurial wine makers and regional wine lover alike. With nearly 50 quality wineries, restaurants, quaint village shops and farmsteads galore, the North Fork has a lot to offer while still remaining pristine and quiet.
Paumanok Vineyards – The winery is a renovated turn-of-the-century barn that houses a fermentation tank room and lab. The spacious tasting room was built on top of the barrel cellar. It is surrounded by an inviting deck overlooking the vineyards. Only premium vinifera grapevines are planted, consisting of Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. For Paumanok wines, only estate grown grapes are used and production is limited to fewer than 12,000 cases.
You will experience the VIP Tour lead by the Paumanok winemaker himself. http://paumanok.com/index.html
Macari Vineyards– The history of Macari Wines reaches back to the 30’s and 40’s when Joseph’s father, Joseph T. Macari Sr., made wine with his father and grandfather in their basement in Corona, Queens, New York. In the mid 60’s, he purchased a 500-acre former potato farm on Long Island Sound. It would be another 30 years before he began to realize his dream of growing grapes and making wine. The farm was fallow until 1995 when Joseph Jr. and Alexandra Macari moved to the North Fork with their four children to begin planting vines. The turning point for Joseph Jr. was when he studied with world renowned visionaries in biodynamic viticulture, the late Alan York from California and Alvaro Espinoza from Chile. His approach is ecological and holistic: he knows that the health of the plants and the character of the grapes depend on well-nourished, living soil, and that each step in the process contributes to the final product.
You will enjoy the Cellar Experience at Macari Vineyards. During your time at Macari, you will be served a cheese and charcuterie lunch. https://macariwines.com
Soundview Hotel – This idyllic property evokes the timeless spirit of a classic seaside resort while its recently renovated spaces (April 2017) offer the comforts of modern life. Guestrooms in airy whites and blues combine the intimacy of a seafront cottage with the perks of a full-service hotel and every room opens directly onto a waterfront deck, with access to a private beach. A full service restaurant, bar, library, and swimming pool with views to the beach and horizon complete the picture. On Friday night, you will have a seasonal group dinner at the Halyard in the Soundview Hotel.
Noah’s Restaurant – After a day of yoga and wine tasting, everyone will come back together to enjoy a group dinner at Noah’s in Greenport. Chef Noah Schwartz is a native Long Islander and New England Culinary Institute alumni. Noah began his culinary career in Sonoma, working in some of California wine country’s premier restaurants. There, he met his future wife, Sunita. A restaurateur herself, Sunita Schwartz studied under one of the best winemakers in the Sonoma region, quickly becoming a respected wine expert. The East Coast beckoned Noah. He fell in love with Long Island’s North Fork and, in 2010, chose Greenport as the home for Noah’s. The availability of so much fresh food inspired Noah to bring his own “In∙noah∙va∙tive” interpretations to classics and introduce his signature small plates. Since its opening, Noah’s has received numerous accolades and Chef Noah has been lauded by Best Chefs America in both 2012 and 2013. https://www.chefnoahs.com
